Aftermarket Glass vs. Vehicle Manufactures Glass

Differences Between OEM and Aftermarket Windshields

An OEM windshield is an identical version of the original and factory-installed windshield that came in your car when it was brand new. These windshields are certified by the Department of Transportation so that you can be assured of their safety and that they will support the structural integrity of your vehicle.

Aftermarket glass is made by auto glass companies that don’t necessarily have contracts with specific automakers. Because of this, these third-party manufacturers may not abide by specific manufacturer guidelines. If fact, due to copyright laws, aftermarket manufacturers are prohibited from producing windshields that are identical to the factory-installed versions. So while the size and shape of the windshield may match, the safety technologies, durability, and thickness of the glass will likely be different, which may cause the collision avoidance systems, occupant safety systems not to work properly, and the only time to find this out may be at the time of an accident, by then injury or death may occur due to these features not working properly or not at all.

Leased Vehicles

If you lease your vehicle many lease agreements specifically state that the windshield or parts can only be replaced with an OE windshield. If you use aftermarket glass for your replacement, you could be faced with extra charges and fees when you return the vehicle at the end of your lease agreement.
